Silkies are an ancient breed originally from Asia, prized for their gentle nature and strong broody instincts. Chicks grow into fluffy juveniles before maturing into soft-feathered adults with dark skin, feathered feet, and a calm, almost pet-like temperament.
Hens typically lay 100–150 small cream eggs per year, but are especially valued for their ability to sit and hatch eggs — making them ideal natural mothers.
With the addition of a Polish hen, you may also see occasional Polkie offspring, combining Silkie softness with the Polish breed’s signature crest — a fun bonus for those interested in unique backyard birds.
